Steps for Getting Your Message Out

My nonprofit has been reviewed on GreatNonprofits. Now what should I do?

Hurray! Now that you have got some public visibility, we recommend getting personally involved in the GreatNonprofits community. Primarily as an individual and also someone actively managing your nonprofit reputation on GreatNonprofits.

We've come up with this simple list of DOs and DON'Ts for nonprofit owners, and we hope you'll keep us posted on what works best!

First the DON'T's

DON'T review your own nonprofit if you are a paid employee

Please don't ask other paid employees to review the organization either. (It's totally OK and great to ask non-paid volunteers and board members to write a review about you.) (see below for alternatives)

DON'T lash out at the people who have written negative reviews about you.

Tempting as that may be, it can backfire.

DON'T overestimate the impact of a single negative review.

It happens to even the best nonprofits. In fact, negative reviews sprinkled in with favorable reviews often act to enhance the credibility of the positive reviews by illustrating the honesty and openness of the people who know you. That said, if you see a trend of negative reviews, you may want to take this feedback and see if you need to improve on your end.

Next the DO's

DO add photos and videos to your nonprofit profile.

Tell the most vivid and memorable story about what you do.

DO ask your constituents to write a review.

Ask your volunteers, donors, clients and others who know the work of your nonprofit, to write a review, even if they don't have anything to write!

They could share a picture they may have about your organization in action, that could be helpful too.

DO send a "public compliment" to someone who has taken the time to post a review about your nonprofit.

They are people who care about your cause and your organization and have taken the time to write about you.

DO respond to a review about you

If you can clarify a point or add additional information, try posting a comment on the review.
